ECOWAS ENERGY COMMISSIONER VISITS PURA
The DG of PURA and his senior staff today welcomed Mr. Morlaye Bangoura, the ECOWAS Commissioner Energy and Mines. The Commissioner was in the Gambia to meet with high level Gambian officials regarding the ECOWAS grant facility to the power sector.
The Commissioner thanked the DG for the warm welcome and mentioned that this was his first official trip since taking office in early February. He mentioned that the ECOWAS grant was very important to both The Gambia and ECOWAS and the benefits of reliable power cannot be over emphasised.
He mentioned the warm reception he received from all Gambian officials and that he had come with a team including the WAPP Secretary General Mr. Amadou Diallo.
The Commissioner mentioned that in the past WAPP has implemented a similar project for Guinea Bissau and he had no doubt that they would do an excellent job in The Gambia.
The Commissioner mentioned that as a former head of a power utility he understood the difficulties NAWEC is going through and that the work of the regulator was crucial in ensuring that utilities get enough revenue to cover their costs. For his part the SG of WAPP thanked PURA for the warm welcome and mentioned that he had worked with the DG of PURA for a long time now and was looking forward to a closer relationship as this project is implemented.
Other remarks were made by the MD of NAWEC as well. The DG assured the Commissioner that PURA would do all it can to help improve the power sector.
