The PURA in partnership with the Gambia Competition and Consumer Protection Commission(GCCPC organised a one day workshop to introduce the Advertisement Regulations contained in the section 12 of the Consumer Protection Act, and the new Complaints Â Management System Developed by PURA. The workshop also witness the signing of an MOU between PURA and GCCPCÂÂ to strengthen the existing relationship between the two institutions.

PURA LAUNCHES QOS MONITORING NETWORK
PURA launched its Quality of Service Monitoring Network (QOS)ÂÂÂ with the support of World Bank through the West African Regional Communication Infrastructure Project (WARCIP).
This new monitoring system is intended to help the PURA improve Quality of Services of mobile coverage and internet services, which is a key priority area for PURA. The new system is designed to support consumers in choosing a service that best suits their needs while promoting competition in the telecommunication industry
PURA has been mandated by Section 83 of The IC Act 2009, to ensure that all licensed Telecommunications Service Providers offer an acceptable quality of service to its consumers. This has been a challenge in the past for PURA, but with the purchase of the QOS Monitoring Network, the Authority will be able to monitor the QOS carefully.

CERTIFICATES OF APPRECIATION TO THE IEC AND IMMIGRATION DEPARTMENT
The Director General of PURA on Wednesday 31st August 2016 presented certificates of appreciation to Staff of the Immigration Department and the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) who were responsible for the verification of registered subscriber details from GSM mobile operators. He was accompanied by a high level delegation from PURA and was recieved by the IEC Chairman Mr. Njie and the Director of Immigration, Mr Mboob at their respective offices. PURA thanks the two institutions for their professionalism and hard work over the last five year. The DG PURA emphasised that they were partners and PURA would continue to work with them on other matters relevant to our work.
The presentation took place at the office of the Director of Immigration in Banjul and at the IEC HQ along the Bertil Harding Highway.

2016 SUMMER INTERNS
As with previous years, PURA welcomes five new interns from different places who have come to learn about ragulatory work as well as share experiences.
During their time here they willinteract with different staff and we hope will learn something to help shape their future careers and aspirations.
My name is Awa Kebbeh and I am 29 years of age. I am a graduate of The University of The Gambia with a Bsc. Major in Management and a minor in Marketing. My primary objective as a well determined and hardworking individual is to gain experience in a wider perspective particularly in areas relating to my qualification. Therefore, I choose PURA in order to increase my level of productivity and efficiency as I am looking forward to a career development to realise my targeted goals and objectives.
Ndey Yassin Sosseh is a BA holder in Business Administration with a specialism in Business Law from London Southbank University. She started a 6-month internship program with PURA in February and “it has turned out to be the best 6 months of her life”. She has utilized her time by maximizing her skills and has applied what she has learned in preceding years which has been very fruitful. One of my main focuses for my internship with PURA was to gain an insight into the legal issues that arise in the company and how it is handled on a daily basis.
She wants to further her studies in Law and International Relations. She enjoys reading and swimming.
My name is Gocale Nicoue. I am 20 years old studying Environmental Policy and Planning, and Global Health at the University of Iowa in the United States. One of my main focus for my internship with PURA is to evaluate the efficiency of using electronic data collection, specifically, mobile technology to collect data for global health risk assessment. I am conducting a needs assessment to identify the productivity of using three mobile data collection devices (FieldLogs, Batchgeo, and GPS Waypoint) compared to the current data collection systems of PURA. After undergraduate, my plan is to pursue my master’s degree in public health (epidemiology). My hobbies include playing tennis, running, reading, and dancing. I am glad to be working with PURA for the summer.
Binta Ceesay is a Gambian pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in Communication Studies- Journalism at the Jayee University College in Ghana. I am a third year student. I am doing a two month job placement at PURA to enhance my knowledge and skills and further expose me to ethics and organizational culture in a professional setting.
While at PURA I am engaged in a project to increase the visibility of the authority and increase the awareness of the general public on the work of PURA and how the authority can help solve some of the problems they face with their service providers. My plan is to further my studies in Corporate Communication and this job placement will help me in that venture. During my spare time I love to go to the gym, read novels, watch movies and TV shows and go to the Cinema.
Ndey Jallow is a 19 year old girl who is currently pursuing a degree in Physics at the University of The Gambia. She is currently in her second year. She wants to study electrical engineering at masters. She is currently on a three month internship at the electrical department of PURA. Her main expectations from PURA during this internship is to be able to learn and understand applications on electricity. Her hobbies are reading, sports and dancing.

ITU Regional Director visits PURA
The ITU Africa Regional Director, Mr Andrew Regege was in The Gambia to attend the TICAD pre-meeting in preparation for the Summit in August 2016 which is sponsored by the Japanese Government and hosted by The Gambia Government. He was also a special guest of PURA, at the request of his office in Addis Ababa. ÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂ During his visit, Mr Regege meant with the Director General of PURA and his management team on key issues facing the ICT sector in the Gambia. A courtesy call was extended to the PS of MOICI.

Celebrating Girls in ICT Day - 2016
PURA in partnership with the Ministry of Information and Communications Infrastructure (MOICI) hosted a forum and a job fair focused on building the capacity of girls and young women in the Information Communications Technology (ITC) sector to help the global effort to raise awareness, empower and encourage girls to consider studies and careers in ICTs.
As part of the celebrations for the Girls in ITC day, PURA invited fifty girls from selected Senior Secondary High Schools within the Greater Banjul Area for a forum with three top Gambia women who have excelled in the field of Information Communications Technology to act as mentors during the event. PURA also introduced a job fair which brought together eight organisations from the public and private to showcase their job prospects. ÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂ The Directorate of Human Resources and Corporate Affairs was also on hand to give career advice and guidance.
This is the 3rd year PURA has taking part in Girls in ITC which is backed by all ITU Member States. This celebration is held every 4th Thursday in April every year.Last year more than 66,000 girls and young women took part in over 1,800 celebrations of International Girls in over 130 countries worldwide!

PURA Donates Chemical Reagents and launches Database.
The Public Utility Regulatory Authority (PURA), on Friday,19th February 2016 handed over D400,000 worth of chemical reagents, heavy metals test kits for Lead and Mercury and a new Desktop PC to the Water Quality Laboratory under the Department of Water Resources (DWR) at Abuko. The event also witnessed the launch of a database containing all the data collected since 2009.
PURA has had a long relationship with the DWR. In 2009, PURA and the DWR entered into a MoU in which the DWR’s Abuko lab would carry out independent water quality sampling and analysis for PURA. In return, PURA would support the Lab through annual financial assistance to purchase reagents and logistical support for quarterly monitoring exercises to ensure the quality of portable water services provided by NAWEC meets the WHO Drinking Water Standard. To date, PURA has invested one million dalasi towards this partnership and will continue to work closely and support DWR to ensure that we have high quality water nationwide.

UTG- ITCA ICT TRAINING FOR RURAL TEACHERS
The Gambia Public Utilities Regulatory Authority under its regulatory support has over the years associated its regulatory support services to the UTG-ITCA. As a result of this collaboration the Authority sponsored a one-week fact finding tour to high schools in the rural area in 2014, in relation to the ICT gap analysis. The team from this tour identified a need for training for ICT teachers in the rural. After careful deliberations over the report, the Authority decided in collaboration with UTG-ITCA to organize a week-long ICT training from the 10th to 14th August 2015 for selected rural high schools on basic teaching techniques and skills in Information technology.
This training is aimed at three different stages of ICT development namely Technology literacy, Knowledge deepening and Knowledge creation.
This ICT Training is envisaged to offer a means for the teachers in the rural part of the Country to gain an insight in the global ICT standard through the use of technological tools for effective teaching and learning in their schools.
The activity of the trainers is also envisaged to open new opportunities for the rural students to appreciate and increase uptake of ICT in term by complimenting and supplementing learning in their schools. This will no doubt widen their innovative minds as future responsible citizens of our country.
PURA COMMENCES A FOUR (4) DAY STRATEGIC AND ORGANISATIONAL PLAN RETREAT
Great Village International Consultants Inc., in association with London Economics International (LEI) and Incyte Consulting Ltd. (Incyte), are currently working with PURA to develop the Regulator's Strategic and Organisational Plan for the years 2015-2017. This Plan will entail a complete diagnostic evaluation of PURA and the preparation of a capacity development and training plan. This project is being funded by the World Band through theÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂ West Africa Regional Communications Infrastructure Program (WARCIP).ÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂ ÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂ
The four (4) day retreat will include consultations with policy makers and stakeholders to set regulatory priorities and realign PURA's resources to effectively address the priorities. Relevant stakeholders such as the Ministry of Information and Communication Infrastructure (MOICI), the GSM operators and Consumer Representatives will review the agreed Implementation Action Plan for their input.
The Consultants will conduct a Diagnostic Evaluation of the PURA structure, staff, processes and procedures to determine existing capacities and recommend changes to effectively implement the final Strategic Plan.

PURA celebrate Girls in ICT day - 23rd April 2015
PURA in partnership with the Ministry Of Information Communication Infrastructure (MOICI) hosted a forum with fifty girls from selected Senior Secondary High Schools within the Greater Banjul Area in celebration of International Girls In ITC Day. This initiative takes place on the fourth Thursday of every April as established by the ITU.
The forum focused on building the capacity of girls and young women in the ITC sector to help the global effort to raise awareness on empowering and encouraging them to consider studies and careers in ICTs. This day gave young girls the opportunity see and experience ICTs in a new light encouraging them to consider a future in technology. Five top Gambia women who have excelled in the field of Information Communications Technology and Engineering acted as mentors during the event.
To date, over 111,000 girls and young women have taken part in more than 3,500 events held in 140 countries around the world.

The Executive committees of the Foundation of The Gambia Incorporation- Consumer Rights Protection Chapter (FGI-CRPC) extended its sincere appreciation and gratitude by presenting an award to the A.g Director General of PURA. This is in recognition for his invaluable contribution towards the development of consumer rights awareness in the Gambia. The Award ceremony was held as the PURA Head office were Mr Sanneh received an award for his outstanding support to the Consumer Rights community through the years.

PURA Oragnises 5th Consumer Parliament
The Gambia Public Utilities Regulatory Authority (PURA) organized a consumer parliament at the Semega Janneh Hall on Saturday 6th December 2014.
The Consumer Parliament is organized by PURA as an opportunity for the general public to come face to face with their service providers to collectively address consumer concerns and challenges affecting the regulated sectors.

•Water & Sewerage NAWEC
•Telecommunications – GAMTEL, GAMCEL, AFRICELL, COMIUM AND QCELL

The hall was fully packed as consumers raised their complaints about service delivery. However there were also praises for the progress made by operators over the last few years.
PURA would like to thank the residents of Kanifing municipality who came out in their number to raise their concerns. The comments complaints from the consumers were logged and would be followed-up by PURA staff.

PURA hands over Ming- Daw Computer Lab
PURA launched its first Connect Schools – Computer Labs (CS-CL) at Ming-Daw Senior Secondary School on 19th Of October 2014 as part of the 20th Anniversary Celebrations of the July 22nd Revolution. The school lab is equiped with 23 new PCs a projector and broadband internet connection.

This event was inaugurated by The Minister of Basic & Secondary Education, Hon. Fatou Lamin Faye. The aim of this project is to strategically promote broadband internet connectivity for schools in peri-urban and rural areas in the country. PURA welcomes National Communications Authority (NCA) ÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂ Regulators from Ghana
PURA extended an invitation to National Communication Authority in Ghana (NCA) for a knowledge sharing experience learning on the challenges of the deployment of LTE (Long-Term Evolution) technology. NCA was singled out and selected as reference point in the sub-region due to a proven track record of their remarkable achievements in the ICT sector and the deployment of LTE in Ghana. PURA has received application for the deployment of LTE with the aim of building its capacity on this new technology.

Toll Free National Ebola Helpline- 1025
PURA today has supported the efforts of the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare by setting up a toll free National Ebola Helpline. The aim of this initiative is to complement the efforts of the MOHSW who has already published the names of all the regional contact persons concerning Ebola.
PURA has allocated a number to call – 1025. All GSM operators have been requested to open this number as an Emergency number at no cost to consumers.
