Type approval certification is a regulatory function that allows an equipment to be certified to ensure that it meets essential requirements such as the safety of life and health, electromagnetic compatibility and effective use of the electromagnetic frequency spectrum. The technical specifications, standards to fulfil essential requirements will be published by PURA.
In particular, for example within the telecoms sector, type approval certification further:
Protects consumers from products that are non – compatible with the local telecommunications network.
Ensures that the operating frequency of all radio communication equipment meets the frequency spectrum allocation in The Gambia.
That no harmful interference is caused to legal telecommunications and radio- communication services of licensed service providers.
Mandate of PURA for Type Approval Certification of Equipment
The Public Utilities Regulatory Authority has within its mandate the responsibility of Type Approval Certification of telecommunications network and terminal equipment intended for use in or connection to the public telecommunications networks and radio communication equipment to be manufactured or imported for use in The Gambia.
In doing so PURA would only ensure that only certified equipment are manufactured / imported into the country. The mandate for Type Approval Certification is enshrined in the sector specific legislations such as the Information and Communications Act 2009, Part XI – Type-Approval of Terminal Equipment, Sections 108 and 109.
Who should apply for Type Approval Certificate?
A manufacturer / service provider in The Gambia
A local representative of a manufacturer
A vendor with valid business licence in The Gambia.
Once an enquiry for Type Approval of an equipment has been recieved, PURA would issue a formal response.
