Spectrum Management
PURA have satisfactorily divided the GSM 1800MHz band (total of 374 channels) equally into four parts of 90 channels each between GAMCEL, COMIUM, AFRICELL and the last 90 channels for any new entrant
The International Telecommunication Union – Development Bureau (ITU-D), in collaboration with the Public Utilities Regulatory Authority (PURA), jointly organised a very successful workshop for English speaking West African countries, on Spectrum Management and Monitoring, from 8th to 12th October 2007, at the Paradise Beach Hotel, Banjul, The Gambia. The meeting was attended by delegates from the ITU Regional office in Dakar, two spectrum resourced persons hired by the ITU, participants from Ghana, Sierra Leone, Guinea Bissau and Liberia. Also in attendance were participants from DOSCIT, PURA, National Assembly, GAMTEL, COMIUM, AFRICEL, Quantum Net, Quantum Associates, GAF, GPF, Netpage, AirTip, GCAA, GDA, Consumer Protection and GRTS.
For a proper management of the frequencies in the country PURA has set up a nationwide frequency database. All institutions using spectrum have been requested to send in the frequencies they are currently using to PURA for the compilation of a national frequency database of all the frequencies. This will ensure security of the frequency plan and less interference within the various networks in the country.
This will also ensure an effective and efficient management of the scares spectrum resources in The Gambia.
